Peles Castle (Castelul Peles)

One of the most visited sites in Romania, the Peles Castle served as the summer retreat for the Romanian monarchy until 1945. After the Communist regime seized all royal property, the castle was converted into a museum and opened to the public in 1953. 22 years later, in 1975, Nicolae Ceausescu decided to close the castle entirely, and it would remain closed all the way until 1990, after the 1989 Romanian Revolution.
